Bossa Nova's roots ... ( 2 months ago by cammicty)
Bossa Nova's roots are Africa, and so are Ella's, so it fits Ella well, she was brilliant in this, especially not to know the language. NO ONE CAN OUTSING THE QUEEN AND CREATOR OF SCATT!

Well, there's an African influence on it, but it's Brazilian, and like everything in Brazil, it's a mix of black, white and native indian cultures, not only black (african). And it doesn't fit Ella well. First of all, her band can't play bossa nova. And Ella improvising on girl from Ipanema is hideous. She's great singing jazz, but not Bossa Nova. But she sings melodies like the one from Desafinado perfectly. Not a single note is wrong. Anyway, she was a great singer, just not for bossa nova.

hmmm, would say the bossa should not be swung too much, or taken at that speed. Ella's work is awesome, one of her versions of desafinado was awesome but other times she just missed out what i like in the bossa such as here. Love her though!!!

eckertz: i love Brazilian music but can't say i hear any kind of european elements.Don't forget classical music is not that of European, they popularized it. It's foundations are in Afrika.Instruments such as the lyre(aka harp),drum, wind instruments etc all (i believe) originated in Afrika.Orchestrated music was never in Europe before it was in Afrika.

When Brazilian ... ( 1 month ago by BIGREDDOGIII)
When Brazilian musicians like composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and guitarist Joao Gilberto heard the "cool jazz" of the U.S. in the late 1950s and adapted it to a gentler samba rhythm syncopated on the guitar the result was the reflective, romantic music called Bossa Nova. It's uniquely Brazilian.

Your opinion, however, Ella can sing anything, and she was just fine singing Boss Nova. If you know anything about Ella, she was sick alot during the early 70's, sounds here like she has a cold. She traveled worldwide, singing, at clubs everywhere, she was not at her best her, possibly, but I've heard her sing Bossa Nova, and she can sing anything. She was not Brazilian, so you can't expect her to sound like one,she was singing straight black jazz, scatting doing what she does best!

Also the biggest influence on Brazilian Samba, Bossa Nova, Samba, is purely African, the rest follows! There is absolutely no European influence!

uh? Jobim and ... ( 1 week ago by eckertz)
uh? Jobim and Gilberto "adapted" yankee music? uh? What's wrong with you? Bossa Nova does NOT come from Jazz, for God's sake. If both have rich harmonies is because they have the same influence: the music of composers like Debussy, for instance. Jobim was writing that kind of music at the same time U.S. composers were writing theirs and they were all influenced by the music of that time. This is the only similarity on them. Bossa Nova is not an adaptation of any other kind of music. Shhh!
